Making History Come Alive

The Overland Campaign of 1864

May , 1864

Union commander, General U.S. Grant, launched a summer operation, known as The Overland Campaign, to try and entice General Robert E. Lee to fight in the open country. Lee however, will fight  in the tangled  mess of brush, vines and thickets, known as The Wilderness.  The two armies will continue to march and fight to Spotsylvania Court House, North Anna and Cold Harbor, culminating in the seige of Petersburg and eventually the evacuation of Richmond and Petersburg in 1865.
