When Union General U.S. Grant was named Supreme Commander of all U.S. forces in the spring of 1864, he outlines a plan to President Lincoln that in his view, will strangle the Confederacy’s capacity and will to continue the war. His objective in Virginia is to destroy Confederate General Robert E. Lee’s Army of Northern Virginia. This will become the bloodiest campaign in U.S. history.
